In December 1833, Mr. D.P Hurlbut threatened to kill the Prophet Joseph Smith, who filed a complaint against Hurlbut to the justice of the peace for Kirtland. The active anti-Mormon Hurlbut was subsequently brought to court. "This article presents the first legal examination of Ohio v. Hurlbut in light of all of the known pertinent court records and within the religious context of Joseph Smith's earliest legal experience in Ohio." (taken from author's introduction)
