Jean Rio Griffiths left England as an LDS convert and journeyed to the Salt Lake Valley in 1851. While she later left the Church, the author contends that it was the Church that drove Jean away, not the wavering of her own testimony. In examining Jean Rio's diary, the author finds "evidence that, for many converts, the reality of nineteenth-century Utah--the church's expropriation of property under the doctrine of 'consecraction,' the practice of polygamy, the violence of some of the rituals, all amid a dictatorial theocracy--was that of an oppressive regime, particularly for women."
