The economic, political, and social history of Las Vegas, Nevada "suffers from neglect." Few scholarly publications about the city's history exist, probably because the population explosion in Las Vegas took scholars by surprise. Social history suffers from the most neglect, since many people still consider "Las Vegas and organized religion to be mutually exclusive." However, Catholics, Mormons, and Jews have influenced this city. The LDS Church built a fort near Las Vegas in 1855 as a way station between Utah and California. Moehring feels that more research should be done on the relationship between members of the Church in Nevada and members in Utah, and the reasons Hispanic residents are becoming converts.
