At twenty-one, Lucinda Haws travelled to Utah with her family in 1848. Later that same year, she was married to Shadrack Holdaway, who had just returned from the Mormon Battalion and the gold fields of California. In the spring of 1849, Shadrack and Lucinda crossed the plains going East to buy equipment for a woolen mill. They returned to Utah with the Snow Company in 1850. Lucinda details the events of the 1849 and 1850 crossings in her autobiography.
