Dr. Woolley gives a brief sketch of the events leading to the formation of Collegium Aesculapium. The idea of a formal organization for health care professionals that are members or friends of the Church came when Dr. Woolley was appointed as director of the BYU Student Health Center. He began discussing the need for an organization with other health care professionals and the first official meeting was held on October 16, 1982. The group adopted the name Collegium Aesculapium, a Latin phrase meaning "colleagues in healing." While not an official Church organization, Collegium Aesculapium functions under Church approval and is dedicated to promoting ideals of moral and ethical integrity, serving others, accomplishing Church service as called upon, and upholding the principles and doctrines of the Church.
