McPherson gives a brief history of the initial settlement of San Juan County, considered to be one of the last frontiers in the United States. The earliest homesteaders were part of the Elk Mountain Mission, a short-lived settlement near Moab. Other isolated groups ventured into the area, but it wasn't until 1880 that settlement in the county began in earnest. The influx of miners and cattlemen brought permanent settlements and created permanent changes for the native Ute and Navajo tribes in the county.
