Albert R. Lyman was carried as a baby in his mother's arms down the slopes of the Hole-in-the-Rock during the San Juan Mission expedition of 1879-1880. His father, Platte D. Lyman, led the expedition while Silas S. Smith was gone in search of tools and supplies. The arduous journey was a testament to the fortitude and faithfulness of the company, and stands as one of the most difficult and amazing journeys in the history of the West.
