The Church "has been noted for its previous policy of restricting Africans and African Americans from holding the priesthood. Though the policy was lifted in 1978, it has had lingering effects as outlined by others in this volume. In this chapter I note the history of racially separate religious worship in the United States, but also how difficult the LDS practice was for the few members who were black. Next, I discuss the racial attitudes of white LDS members of the church. I then examine the characteristics of a sample of those African Americans who have joined the LDS Church despite the previous priesthood ban. Finally, I analyze some of the reported experiences of some African American members who have joined the LDS Church." (taken from author's introduction)
