Rather than living in Kirtland, Joseph and Emma lived in Hiram, Ohio, with John Johnson and his family. While there, Joseph worked with Sidney Rigdon on the translation of the Bible and received many of the revelations which were included in the Book of Commandments. Bitter persecution arose while Joseph lived in Hiram. Ezra Booth and Symonds Ryder were two of the first outspoken apostates and campaigned against the Latter-day Saint movement. Additionally, on March 24, 1832, Joseph was dragged from the John Johnson home and was tarred and feathered by a mob.
