This brief biographical sketch of Joseph Smith III was taken from an extra of "Zion's Ensign," December 11, 1914. Joseph was born to Joseph Smith, Jr. and Emma Hale Smith on November 6, 1832. Prior to the murder of his father, Joseph III was baptized and later given a blessing which designated him as the Prophet Joseph's successor. Though young Joseph kept himself aloof from the various factions that surfaced in the wake of his father's death, he nevertheless had several spiritual experiences that convinced him that it was his duty to take his place as leader of the "Saints reorganizing at Zarahemla." He attended their general conference in April 1860, where he was sustained as Prophet, Seer, and Revelator of the Reorganized Church, and Successor of Joseph Smith, Jr. He faithfully served the church and its membership until his death on December 10, 1914.
