In 1829, Oliver Cowdery compiled the "Articles of the Church of Christ" from passages in the Book of Mormon and a few of Joseph Smith's 1829 revelations. This statement detailing doctrine and ordinances was a forerunner to the more comprehensive "Articles and Covenants of the Church" revealed to Joseph Smith in 1830, which later became Doctrine and Covenants section 20. It is unclear whether the "Articles and Covenants" were written down and presented at the organization of the Church in April 1830, but they were certainly presented at the first quarterly Priesthood conference the following June. Oliver Cowdery initially had some trouble accepting the revelation given to Joseph Smith, but had become reconciled by the time the Articles and Covenants were presented and accepted at the September conference. Faulring discusses Cowdery's "Articles of the Church" and the "Articles and Covenants of the Church" in detail, comparing and contrasting their origins, their content, and their style. The complete text of the "Articles of the Church" is included in an appendix.
