Frank was the son of George Q. Cannon. Frank waged a life-long battle against alcoholism and immorality. His discontent with Mormonis occurred, however, when he was not reelected into the Senate in 1896. He saw this as a result of the Church's involvement in politics and called for Church leaders to devote themselves to religious matters, not secular affairs.
