13 May 1856 to 14 October 1856. After leaving Grantsville, Utah, the Hundleys camp for several days at a cave, waiting for their company to form. Traveling through Echo Canyon, Ellen "suffered a heap of fatigue walking and carrying my child." After several days without water, someone finds a buried snow bank, partially reliving the company's thirst. Infighting among the Kiowas forces the Hundleys back to the safety of Bents Fort in Colorado. Ellen describes an Indian war dance that "made the cold chills run over me to' hear them war hoop and yell." Her family leaves the wagon company and travels alone through Osage territory back to Texas.
