On 2 August 1913 the First Presidency issued a message entitled "A Voice of Warning" regarding purported revelations not in harmony with Church teachings. This chapter discusses two episodes in Mormon history in which Latter-day Saints become fascinated with sensational claims. In the first episode, John H. Koyle builds a "Dream Mine" in Salem, Utah with the promise that gold will come in the Last Days, and many Saints buy stock in the mine despite the Church's opposition. The second episode revolves around the "Samuel Lutz Prophecy", first reported by Jacob Spori, which supposedly predicted the restoration of Christ's church with "all the old Priesthood, with Apostles, Prophets, Teachers, and Deacons." Although this prophecy has enjoyed some popularity in the LDS Church, though nobody else has been able to verify it.
