26 June 1848 to 28 September 1848. Green leaves Sutter's mill in California as part of a company of former Mormon Battalion members led by Jonathan Holmes. Resting near the American River, Green hunts for gold. As they ascend the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the company builds a road. Green's horse is stolen by Indians and he frequently stands guard against further Indian trouble. The company reaches Captain Brown's ranch (later Ogden, Utah).
