Brodie was an intellectual who criticised the Mormon hierarchy. She broke from the Church after writing, No Man knows my History: The Life of Joseph Smith, the Mormon Prophet. Her book claimed that Smith's motives for organizing the Mormon church were foremost secular. Brodie's dissension from Mormonism represents the struggles of many Mormon intellectuals who deemed Mormon leaders as unprogressive.
