September 17, 1846 to October 28, 1847. Bullock chronicles the Mormons overland trail experience crossing the Plains with the first company of pioneers. He begins with a record of the Nauvoo persecutions immediately leading up to the exodus in 1846. Bullock provides an account of the miracle of the quails after the Saints had crossed the Mississippi river. Though largely devoted to mundane activities such as hunting game, wagon mending, and weather, Bullock also records valuable information on the Mormon Battalion, his initial reaction to the sight of the Salt Lake Valley, and the planning of Salt Lake City as well as numerous others. Bullock notes, in contrast to some accounts, Brigham Youngs anger at President James K. Polk for commissioning the Mormon Battalion. Upon reaching the Salt Lake Valley (which he records first sighting on July 22), Bullock discusses the city planning meetings as well as the measurements for the Salt Lake City temple. He often refers to Mormon-Indian relations, including several accounts of Indian raids as well as a sermon wherein Brigham Young expresses sympathy and care for the Indians as the remnants of Israel. Bullock finally details the beginning segments of the return trip to Winter Quarters, Nebraska to retrieve the next caravan of Saints.
