Huff endeavors to show that 'the United Order at Joseph Smith's time was the equivalent of today's Corporation of the President in that it was organized to hold property and conduct general church business.' (p. 1.2) The order constituted a partnership and followed the usual business law rules for conducting a partnership. It was involved in purchasing land, acquiring supplies, and printing church periodicals and scriptures. (p. 1.2) This contrasted with the Brigham Young era in that: 1) there was no centralized or common ownership and/or control of property; 2) the united order did not involve elements of socialism; and 3) the term consecration referred only to 'contributions of the sort commonly made within the Church today.' (p. 1.4).
