Lawrence was not so much critical about Mormon theology as he was about the Church as an institution. He disagreed with the economic and political policies of Brigham Young, called for freedom of expression and rejected the concept of the gathering of Zion. His was an intellectual struggle and he eventually left the Church and joined the Godbeit movement in 1869.
