Capt. Howard Stansbury's expedition was dispatched by the US Army Corps of Topographical Engineers to explore the Great Salt Lake, to study the Mormans, their settlements, local Indians, locate a supply route from SLC to the Oregon Trail, and to study the region's natural resources. Madsen (history, emeritus, U. of Utah) bases this account on the writings of Stansbury, Gunnison (surveyor), Hudson (artist) and Carrington (a leading Mormon official)
