In 19th Century America, women became increasingly involved in the literary field, contributing to a variety of newspapers and magazines. Traces of this literary movement were felt in Salt Lake City when the women's publication, 'The Exponent' was published in 1871. This paper addresses a wide variety of topics of interest to women. Carol Madsen shows how 'The Exponent' preserved a record of womens' organizations, clubs, societies and individual achievements during a dynamic period of Mormon history.
