20 May 1853 to 17 September 1853. King's diary picks up in Sugar Creek, Iowa as her family of three daughters, a son, and her Anglican husband travel from England to Salt Lake City. Hannah has mixed feelings about Claudius Spencer, the wagon train leader. She remarks on the variety of obstacles she crosses and visits friends in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Hannah minutely records her feelings and interactions with members of her company. She argues with Claudius Spencer, and fears that he will marry two of her daughters. Hannah's son Thomas almost dies, and the company reaches Echo Canyon in Utah Territory.
