The Emmett Company left Nauvoo in the fall of 1844 in response to a previous plan of Joseph Smith. This exodus was, however, against the current council of Brigham Young and the Twelve. The Emmett Company camped at Fort Vermillion in Iowa and kept in contact with the Saints in Nauvoo. Eventually, with the movement westward, the majority of the company traveled to Salt Lake City.
