"Names of families and birthdates. Conversion to Mormonism in Illinois, 1840. To Nauvoo. Mission to Michigan, 1844. News of death of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. Worked on Nauvoo Temple, 845. Mob devastations. Nauvoo Legion. Preparations for departure. Rebaptism of author's father. ("The rest of my kindred are as hard as the nether mill stone.") Temple endowments. Patriarchal blessings. Departure from Nauvoo. Pow-wow with Indians. Captain of artillery company. Squabble between Scott and Markham. {"It reminds one of Don Quinots attack upon the windmill.") Selected as one of pioneers, 1847. Overland journey. Buffalos. Indians. Comments on 4 July 1847. ("This is Uncle Sam's day of Independence. Well we are independent of all the powers of the gentiles, and that's enough for us.") Arrival in Salt Lake Valley. Exploration. Return to Winter Quarters; letter of instruction from Brigham Young appointing Jacob captain. Insubordination problems. Wintered at Winter Quarters. Departure for West. Fracas with Indians. ("This was a foolish affair on the part of our men. Elders of Isael are not called to make war upon the Lamanites.") Death of fourteen-year-old son. On to Salt Lake. Worked on mill. Organizations of Nauvoo Legion. Gleaned wheat. Public works. Took plural wife when wife gave up opposition, 1851. July 4 picnic at Black Rock. Dedication of house, 1852. Domestic tension. Relation of typescript to holograph not entirely clear. Note at end by J. L. Halliday, dated 1910: "The above is a true copy (as near as possible) of what was handed me to be, and what I believe to be, the original copy of the history of Norton Jacob, covering the period herein stated, and in which I have used his own words and construction as near as I could." Preface to published version explains that original discovered in 1949. Two earlier typewritten copies exist: the 1910 Halliday typescript and one made in 1940 by BYU. Editors compared original against these copies. Work not accompanied by footnotes, but editing appears to have been done carefully. Published version apparently taken from HDC [LDS Church Archives] holograph." [Abstract from Davis Bitton's Guide to Mormon Diaries and Autobiographies, 1977]|(Pioneer of 1847; colonization of Utah.)
