Found that wife Louisa had died. Met again with regents; discussed proposed Deseret Alphabet. Married Aseneth Gheen, widow, 1854. Called to Green River Mission. Legal activities there. Returned to Salt Lake City. Aseneth had obtained a divorce. To Parowan to attend session of district court. Attended big New Year party for federal officials, 1855. U.S. district attorney pro tem. Birth of a son to wife Alvira. Went with expedition to rescue handcart company. ("The wagons could not accommodate the half of those not able to walk.") Funeral of Jedediah M. Grant. Reformation in Utah. ("The fire of the reformation is burning many out who flee from the Territory afraid of their lives.") Appointed Judge Advocate of Nauvoo Legion. Utah War. Served in Echo Canyon. Legislature. Organization of Big Move. Coming of peace commissioners. Details of many lawsuits. Attended Cradlebaugh Court in Provo, 1859. On committee to arrange territorial code of laws. Birth of another son. Started publishing a newspaper, The Mountaineer. Only a half-dozen entries, 186061. Gap: 1862-68. Resumed coverage in 1869. Tried to stop using tobacco. Attended School of the Prophets. Children had measles. Legal business. The editor of the published version has supplied valuable notes, including identification of many persons mentioned, and has filled in the gaps regarding Stout's activities, 1862-68 and from 1870 on."
