A close examination of the historical record shows that Moroni is identified as an angel in all firsthand accounts and the earliest accounts. Many who seek to depict Moroni as a treasure-guardian do so in an attempt to show that 'Joseph's religious claims are illegitimate.' Historians who view Moroni as a treasure-guardian (rather than an angel) draw upon second-hand and third-hand sources for their interpretation--some composed decades after the fact. Among these are Dale Morgan, D. Michael Quinn, and H. Michael Marquardt and Wesley P. Walters. The author concludes that 'Joseph Smith's encounters with Moroni are best understood as the visits of a heavenly messenger to a prayerful seeker.'
