Cracroft reviews Taylor's literary career. While Taylor remained a member of the Church throughout his life and was 'active' according to his own standards, he kept a critical distance from the main body of the Church, classifying himself as a maverick. His maverick status was reflected in his critical, but humorous, writing style. The history of Taylor's family made a significant impact on Taylor's outlook and choice of subjects.
