Eugene England's contributions to the study of Mormon letters were detailed. In 1966, England founded 'Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought' and in 1976 he co-founded the Association for Mormon Letters. He was also a supporter and contributor to other Mormon journals, such as Sunstone, BYU Studies, Exponent II, and Literature and Belief. England developed the study of Mormon authors in programs and classes at BYU and UVSC. He oversaw several collections of Mormon literature and criticism of Mormon literature. England believed that the personal essay would be the most valuable contribution to Mormon literature and life. He not only encouraged all of his students to write personal essays, but published several of his own. His essays dealt with difficult themes from Mormon culture and doctrine, as well as contradictions he saw in his own life
