Eugene England addressed the BYU English department faculty in an effort to bring about reconciliation between liberal and conservative factions. He talked about his dual liberal-conservative persona. His 'center of gravity' has shifted between these liberal and conservative paradigms, as well as the public's perception of him; and yet, he has been the same person. Liberal and conservative are only cultural differneces; they are not religious absolutes. Both approaches are required to achieve balance, understanding, and equality. Many things have happened within the department that have caused offense, hurt, and misunderstanding. Reacting in anger only promotes violence and compounds the problem. Genuine forgiveness should be reached in honesty, sincerity, and spirit of charity. England proposed a forum of open discussion between faculty in which disagreements could be resolved in such an environment. England apologizes for the comment he made in condemnation of the Strengthening Church Members Committee at the 1992 Sunstone Symposium. He reacted in anger and in public instead of using mercy and privacy. At the time, he took steps to apologize to every member of the committee privately and in public. He then apologized to the faculty for the damage it had caused the department image. He expressed his hope that each person would exercise forgiveness and repentence in order that a reconciliation might be acheived among the staff
