Orson F. Whitney, Boyd K. Packer, Spencer W. Kimball, and others have expressed their expectations for great Mormon literature. Most critics agree that the majority of 'orthodox' Mormon literature is of poor artistic quality. Mormon writers need to have a thorough understanding of Mormon theology and need to use language and form effectively. Mormon literature can be divided into four historical periods: 1) foundations, 2) home literature, 3) the lost generation, and 4) faithful realism. The characterizing forms and topics of each period were discussed. Recently, opportunities in publishing Mormon literature have greatly expanded. Now the challenge is to unite the extremes of art and experience into a blended literary community
