The differences between European indentured servants who emigrated to America and Mormon British converts who were assisted to emigrate to America by the Perpetual Emigrating Fund are discussed. The author utilized ship manifests and PEF records to obtain a demographic view of Mormon emigrants from England in the 1850s and 1860s. He found that PEF emigrants in the 1860s were generally older and more skilled than were PEF emigrants in the 1850s.
