Approximately forty apostate Mormon families desirous of leaving Utah were escorted by Army troops from Camp Floyd in 1859 north via the Salt Lake Cutoff to the California Trail and as far west as just beyond today's Winnemucca, Nevada. The author describes the social and religious climate in Utah that caused these apostate Mormons to fear for their safety. Appendixes at the conclusion of the article give biographical sketches of the Army officers in the escort and a copy of the trail guide created in the report
