Thomas E. Ricks worked on the Nauvoo Temple. While emigrating to Salt Lake City with the Heber C. Kimball company in 1848, he was shot in the back by Indians. He later served a mission in Las Vegas and assisted with the rescue of the Martin and Willie handcart companies. He moved to Cache Valley with his family. From there he was called as the bishop of the Bannock Ward and asked to settle Rexburg. He helped found the Bannock Stake Academy, which was renamed in his honor shortly after his death
