Fish from Utah Lake were used to feed the poor and needy in Salt Lake City and Provo from 1847 through the Great Depression. Distribution programs were first administered through the Church. In the early 1900s, distribution became the responsibility of Utah Fish and Game. The trout population was exhausted in the 1850s, so carp -- later known as the common fish -- were introduced to the lake. Many of Utah Lake's commercial fishing companies contributed to and participated in these charitable programs
