In 1900, a group of students and faculty from Brigham Young Academy set off for a grand scientific expedition into South America. They hoped to bring home archaeological evidence of the Book of Mormon. Although they departed with high expectations and the support of the Church, that support was withdrawn five months after the expedition began. Several reasons are offered for the Church rescinding its support. They include the lack of experience of the group in managing horses and equipment, questionable behavior, and questions about Benjamin Cluff's association with a polygamous wife in Arizona
