The Book of Mormon was an important source of information and inspiration for Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery as they prepared to organize the church. Cowdery selected relevant material from the Book of Mormon in composing his 1829 document known as the 'Articles of the Church of Christ.' Elements of these scriptural teachings were preserved when Joseph Smith inquired of the Lord and received the Articles and Covenants in 1830 (D&C 20). Parallel passages in the foundational documents (Book of Mormon printer's manuscript, 1829 'Articles,' and 1830 'Articles and Covenants') are compared of three key aspects of the church organization. These aspects are baptism and priesthood authority, ordination of teachers and priests, and administration of the sacrament
