Beginning in late 1835, Joseph Smith began performing marriages in Ohio. Although several historians have concluded that Joseph Smith acted illegally in doing so, a study of Ohio's marriage statutes shows that the Prophet had the authority to solemnize marriages. The author looks at the marriage of Newel Knight and Lydia Bailey in detail. He also looks in detail at the county court's denial of Sidney Rigdon's motion to obtain a license to perform marriages in 1835. He finds considerable evidence that shows Rigdon may have been discriminated against
