In 1835, Newel Knight and Lydia Bailey met each other while boarding with Hyrum Smith. Newel Knight was a widower and Lydia had been deserted by her drunken husband. Newel was one of the early converts in 1830 in New York while Lydia joined the Church in Canada when Joseph Smith came there on a mission in 1833. Newel sought counsel in courting Lydia as she had never received a divorce from her husband. Joseph Smith counseled that there was no wrong in it and asserted his right to marry the couple on 24 November 1835. Legal research shows that Joseph Smith had the legal right to perform the wedding, but Lydia 'technically broke the law.'
