Swedes who emigrated to Utah and Idaho did so for one of four reasons. One of the reasons includes Swedish Mormons who emigrated to Utah and Idaho for purely religious reasons. Swedish Mormons were looked upon as being different in the West because they were foreign and because they were members of a controversial religious group. They were doubly subject to discrimination. Because of missionary service, Swedish Mormons were able to retain a strong sense of connection with Sweden
