The RLDS Church archives has in its possession an 1849 letter from David Whitmer to Nathan A. West. West was inquiring about legal title to some land in Caldwell County that had once been owned by King Follett. The letter is important for a variety of reasons. It is one of few surviving letters from David Whitmer written during the first 10-15 years after he separated from the Church. It is in Oliver Cowdery's handwriting and the legalistic wording was composed by him, having been written only a few months before he died. The contents of the letter attest to the confused condition that existed in Far West at the time the Saints were expelled from Missouri.
