Prior to starting west with the Heber C. Kimball company in 1848, Howard Egan was severely wounded during a skirmish with some Indians by the Elkhorn River. He and three other men found some Indians butchering an ox which they had stolen from the Saint's herd. Egan was wounded during the shooting. He was transported back to camp and had to be nursed while traveling in the wagon to the West. The author describes the experiences of Kimball's company enroute to Utah
