The American Government vigorously pursued polygamous husbands in the 19th century. Hostility towards polygamy was mixed in with unfriendly feelings towards the Mormon Church. The authors contend that the anti-polygamy legislation had a tangible economic basis. While plural marriage created benefits for the wives and for some husbands, after polygamy ended, welfare was reduced for most men in a time when only men were represented in Congress
