Eugene England had a profound impact on his students' lives because of his genuine interest in and desire to help people. He drew people to him and encouraged them in their pursuit of knowledge and faith. The love he gave his students extended outside the classroom. He invited them to his home, aided them in their professional pursuits, gave them dating advice, and gave them blessings. For many years, England was involved with the study abroad program in London, where he shared his excitement for castles, for theater, for discussion, and for learning. England worked hard to develop the field of Mormon literature both for critical study and for future writers. He believed that great literature was intertwined with deep faith. During the years before he retired from BYU he was vocal in the intellectual rights of the professors. He acknowledged that there should be parameters on the discussions conducted at a Church school, but disagreed about where those boundaries should be placed. Eugene England was described by many as the most truly Christian man they had ever known.
