This study examined how Mormon women and Catholic nuns used their beliefs about religion and gender to move beyond the boundaries of the late 19th and early 20th centuries to expand their influence through nursing and hospital administration. The Relief Society sponsored a nursing program to encourage this type of training. Many early Mormon women, along with their home duties, were nurses, as well as doctors, and also served in legal and political professions. Women also established all types of businesses.
