While visiting the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum, Carol Cornwall Madsen was impressed with the many pioneer portraits hanging on the walls--among which was her ancestor, Joseph Cornwall. The importance of connecting with one's past by studying the lives of ordinary people was discussed. Madsen, as a researcher with the BYU Joseph Fielding Smith Institute, specializes in women's history, particularly the history of Emmeline B. Wells. Wells was the editor of the 'Woman's Exponent,' a Mormon women's newspaper started in 1872.
