In January 1998, a letter from the First Presidency was read in Mormon wards encouraging Saints to become more politically involved. Elder Marlin Jensen was involved in the discussions and formulation in drafting the letter and granted an interview about it. In this interview he voiced the desire of Church leaders that there be a better balance of members between the Democratic and Republican parties. He said it was not in the best interest of the Church 'to be known as a one-party church.' He said that it hurts both public policy and the Church. He said that members shouldn't reject a party simply because they don't agree with everything in its platform. He offers some frank comments on questions about perceptions that the Church wields power and influence in politics
