The Church did not re-enter Japan until almost three years after World War II had ended, when Edward Clissold finally obtained permission to enter the country as a missionary. Clissold served as Japanese Mission president until 1949, when he was replaced by Vinal Mauss. Initially, the Church and the missionaries were received favorably by the people of Japan; but, when the country began regaining economic independence, religious interest declined. This history of the missionary work in Japan also included commentary on the pattern of geographical and organizational expansion.
