A brief biographical sketch of Joseph Clewes and the circumstances prompting his statement concerning the Mountain Meadows Massacre precede the reproduction of his account as published in the 'Salt Lake Daily Herald,' April 5, 1877. Clewes recalls the efforts of Isaac Haight and others to prevent bloodshed and John D. Lee's leadership and involvement in the attack on the immigrant train. Clewes was not present at either attack, but he was with Lee's camp in the days between the initial Monday attack and the final Friday massacre.
