John W. Young and Brigham Young, Jr. built the first streetcar line in Salt Lake City in 1872. Earlier, Brigham Young rode in the inaugural run of the city's first trolley line. Electric streetcar railroads and trolleys were part of the city's transportation fabric until the 1940s. The LDS Church tried to mediate conflict during streetcar worker strikes near the turn of the century.
