U.S. Military Maps and Survey Notes Correct 1856 LDS Emigration Misrepresentations
A crew of Army engineers closely followed the 1856 Mormon Trail route across Nebraska in doing a preliminary survey for a new military road across eastern Nebraska in 1856. The map and survey notes, found in the archives at West Point, enabled the author to map the 1856 handcart trail from Omaha to Fort Kearny on current county maps appended to the article. The Willie handcart company campsites have been plotted on the county maps. The article also provides a narrative description of the country along the route.
